I painted this woman in the throes of flamenco one night when a heavy silence hung over the studio. I had just gone through a period when my emotions seemed to contradict one another: a smoldering anger mixed with a burning desire for rebirth. As I applied the first stroke of red to the canvas, I felt my own heart burst into flames. The rhythm of her steps, which I imagined pounding the floor, resonated like an echo of my torments and my yearning for freedom. She dances to defy pain and to embrace life with pride. Every swirl of her dress tells a story I didn’t have the words to write, so I painted it. She is at once me, who I once was, and who I aspire to become.
